Hiring an Expert

How do you define when someone is an expert? Is it because they do their job/speciality everyday? Is it because they excel at their job/speciality? We all want an expert when we are looking to hire someone. We want an expert at the doctors office, we want an expert in the court of law, we want an expert to remodel our homes.

If this is all true, then why don’t people hire experts, such as a Realtor®,  to help them buy and sell their home? So many times in my real estate business/industry I hear “I can sell my own home” or “I don’t need my own real estate agent to buy a home”. I fear that the internet has led people to believe they can become experts in real estate in order to sell or buy their own home.

Many sellers see a Realtor® sell their neighbors home in what they think is a weekend.  They see the sign installed on Wednesday, 2 days of open houses, sprinkled in with a few private showings and then by the next weekend they see an under agreement sign put up. What those neighbors don’t know is how many times that Realtor® went to the home and advised the seller before that For Sale sign was even installed. The Realtor® went there first to preview the interior of the home, then back to provide a comparative market analysis of the home, then once hired they went to advise about preparing the home for the market, coordinating any repairs and updates that may be needed,  advised about staging and organizing the home, then they met the photographer at the home for professional photos, 3D tours and floor plans. Between all these visits to the home the Realtor® was answering questions via phone/email from the seller, preparing marketing materials for the home, scheduling broker tours, scheduling open houses, preparing announcements about the new listing, sharing the “coming soon” listing on social media and with their real estate brokerage, preparing marketing pieces for all online websites, answering emails and phone calls from other agents with potential buyers.

The Realtor® is being an expert and doing their full time job of selling real estate!
